Looking For a Mentor/Program / Questions to Consider

When looking for a mentor that is right for you, consider the following questions.  Some of the questions in the list may be important to you, and some may not.  They will, however, help to guide you as you think about what mentor would be a good match. 

  1. Is the mentor available to meet with you on a regular basis?

  2. Is the mentor known to be patient and respectful?  Get references from people the mentor has worked with to find this information out.

  3. Is the mentor nurturing and supportive?

  4. Does the mentor hold certification?  What kind?

  5. Is the mentor in a geographic location easily accessible to you?

  6. How long has the mentor worked as an interpreter?

  7. Is the mentor known to be skilled in a specialty area?  Try to find a mentor that is skilled in areas you are trying to improve.

  8. Was the mentor referred by a trusted individual?

  9. Does the mentor have ample teaching experience?

  10. Does the mentor have an academic degree?

  11. Is the rate charged by the mentor reasonable and affordable?
