NCIEC Mentoring Initiative / Programs Participating in Effective Practices Evaluation
In addition to the Mentor and Mentee Surveys, White Paper, and Focus Groups, the NCIEC has provided funding to several mentorship programs across the nation, both in partnership with RID and separate from that collaboration. The programs receiving support from the NCIEC have agreed to participate in an extensive evaluation. The information gathered from this collaborative effort will contribute toward the goal of identifying current, best, and ultimately, effective practices in mentoring.
RID/NCIEC Mentoring Grant Program
RID and NCIEC have collaborated to support and expand mentorship programs nationwide, with the goals of increasing the skills of new interpreters, increasing the skills of interpreters from minority populations, increasing the skills of Deaf interpreters and Deaf mentors, and preparing more experienced interpreters to move into specialty areas. Historically, the partnership funds 4-6 programs a year. For more information on the RID/NCIEC Mentoring Grant Program, please visit www.rid.org/aboutRID/grants/index.cfm.
Gallaudet University Regional Interpreter Education Center
3 S.T.E.P. (Striving Toward Effective Practices)
The GURIEC, in collaboration with Signs of Development, is offering an interpreter mentorship project to serve underrepresented/underserved areas and people. The goal of the project is to provide support to develop interpreting and mentoring skills for targeted areas and people. Contact Lynne@signs-of-development.org for information on becoming a mentor trainer, mentor, or a mentee in this project.
Western Region Interpreter Education Center Mentorship Program
In 2007, the Western Region Interpreter Education Center began a self-designed and guided mentorship program whereby the mentee and mentor determine the cost, location, duration and activities within the formalized parameters required by the program. WRIEC provides mentor training, maintains a Directory of trained mentors, subsidizes a portion of the mentorship cost, and assists in the process of pairing mentors and mentees For more information, contact CM Hall at hallcm@wou.edu.
