RID/NCIEC Mentoring Grant / About the Grant

By collaborating with RID on the mentoring grant program, the NCIEC is excited to be able to help support and expand mentorship programs nationwide. We share RID’s goals to increase the skills of new interpreters, increase the skills of interpreters from minority populations, increase the skills of Deaf interpreters and Deaf mentors, and to prepare more experienced interpreters to move into specialty areas. The NCIEC is providing leadership in developing evaluation instruments for each of the mentorship program grant recipients. The information gathered from this collaborative effort will contribute towards the goal of identifying current, best, and ultimately effective practices in mentoring.

Mentoring grants to be awarded! Deadline to apply is May 1, 2009

This year, RID and the NCIEC will continue the program for the tenth year.  Local chapters, member sections, interpreter service agencies, deafness-related organizations, interpreter training programs and other private organizations are encouraged to work with the RID affiliate chapters or to gain endorsement of their program and apply for a grant.  Applications have been low in recent years despite increased funding. We hope to see many more applications with increased funding in 2009.

The overall objective of the program is to increase the quantity of skilled interpreters in the field.  Grant amounts are generally in the range of $3,000 to $8,000. The ideal is to award at least one grant to each of the five RID regions. In the absence of compelling reasons otherwise, one-half of each grant will be awarded once decisions are made in June, and the other half will come after the program is complete and reports submitted. Proposals demonstrating collaborative efforts and/or matching funds will be ranked higher.

The goals of the Mentorship Challenge Grants are: 1) to increase the skills of new interpreters in the field; 2) to expand the number of interpreters from minority or underserved populations, and 3) to incorporate Deaf interpreters in the programs as mentors, mentees, trainers and trainees.  Each of these three areas is very important in the rating process.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to cover each of these areas in their proposals.

Information and the application for the program can be found on the RID Web site at http://www.rid.org/aboutRID/grants/#RID-NCIEC%20Mentoring%20Grant%20Program.

Proposals must include a narrative, a proposed budget and a listing of key personnel and their bios.

The deadline for proposals is May 1, 2009.

This program demonstrates RID and NCIEC's support for developing competencies with promising new colleagues in the field and their commitment to the long range goal of increasing diversity in the discipline.  The program task force, composed of RID and NCIEC representatives, will make their recommendations for grant awards to their respective organization leadership.

Q:"What is the definition of mentorship or mentoring?"

A: In 2008, Wikipedia defines mentorship as a developmental relationship between a more experienced mentor and a less experienced partner referred to as a mentee or protégé - a person guided and protected by a more prominent person.
