Effective Practices / Tools and Resources / Domains and Competencies

The Effective Practices Team Domains and Competencies Project was developed to help the National Consortium effectively align their efforts and consolidate communication regarding specialized interpreting domains and competencies. Click here to read the working document produced by the Effective Practices Team.

The Effective Practices Team sought to address the following questions in this project:

  • How and to what extent do the knowledge and proficiencies required for specialized practice in any of these domains overlap the knowledge and proficiencies of general interpreters?
  • How and to what extent do the knowledge and proficiencies required for specialized practice in each field overlap the knowledge and proficiencies of other specialized fields of interpreting?
  • Within the areas of specialization, is it possible to identify a common framework for expressing the requisite domains and competencies so that end users dealing with multiple domains and competencies documents can easily look across the domains and understand similarities and differences?
  • Are there common ways to talk about prior education and experiences that enable one to practice in each area of specialization?
  • Looking across the fields of specialization, what is the relationship between the domains and competencies documents and certification in the area of specialization?

Work on this project was designed to support the individual work teams, which continue to refine their approach to this work. The teams engaged in developing domains and competencies documents and their work can be found here:
